TEAM DEFENSE CHECKLIST

As coaches we don't want our players exposed or surprised by situations in a game that they haven't experienced or practiced beforehand. Here is a team defense checklist that will help prepare your squad to recognize certain game situations and enable them to execute more confidently and successfully:

DEFENSE:

1. ___ BASIC BUNT DEFENSE WITH RUNNER ON 1ST.

• 1B & 3B charge - P fields ball – 2B covers 1B - catcher covers 3B – 3B covers home
• 1B & 3B charge – C fields ball – 2B covers 1B – P covers home – 3B returns to cover 3B
• 1B & 3B charge – 3B fields ball – 2B covers 1B – C covers 3B – P covers home
• Batter misses bunt attempt – C picks runner off 1B

2. ___ BUNT DEFENSE WITH WINNING RUN ON 2B, FIRST BASE OPEN – NO OUTS

• 3B stays home – P fields ball down 3B side & throws to 3B
• 3B stays home – C fields ball & throws to 3B
• 3B stays home – 1B fields ball on right side & throws to 3B
• 1B & 3B charges – SS covers 3B – P fields ball & throws to SS covering 3B
• 1B & 3B charges – SS covers 3B – C fields ball & throws to SS covering 3B
• 1B & 3B charges – SS covers 3B – 1B fields ball & throws to SS covering 3B
• 1B & 3B charges – SS covers 3B – 3B fields ball & throws to SS covering 3B

3. ___ SQUEEZE DEFENSE

4. ___ STEAL DEFENSE:

• Signal System: throw through - SS cover; 2B cover; 2B cut; SS cut; throw to 3B; throw back to P & P throw to 3B
• 1st and 3rd – Balk Steal/Early Steal
• 1st and 3rd – Straight Steal of 2B
• Fake Bunt/Steal
• Delayed Steal

5. ___ PITCHER COVERING 1B ON GROUND BALLS TO RIGHT SIDE OF INFIELD.

6. ___ 3 - 6 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

7. ___ 3 - 6 - 1 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

8. ___ 6 - 4 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

9. ___ 4 - 6 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

10. ___ 2 - 6 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

11. ___ 1 - 6 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

12. ___ 1 - 4 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY COVERAGE.

13. ___ 5 - 4 - DOUBLE PLAY

14. ___ 5 - 2 - 3 DOUBLE PLAY

15. ___ 1 - 2 3 DOUBLE PLAY

16. ___ RUN DOWNS – EMPHASIS ON ONE THROW ONLY!

18. ___ PICKOFFS & SIGNAL SYSTEM:

• Catcher pick at 1B
• Catcher pick at 2B

• Pitcher pick 1B

19. ___ RELAYS:

• Regular base hit relay
• Sac Fly Relay
• Tandem Relay

20. ___ PITCH CALL SYSTEM:

• Pitch location

• Infield positioning
• Outfield positioning

21. ___ OUTFIELD PLAY:

• Throwing To Bases
• Throwing To Plate
• Wheel and Throw
• Fence Play
• Fly Balls Over OF Head
• Do or Die Ground Balls
• Hitting Relay/Cut-Off Men Man
• Fly Ball Communication
• Backing Up Bases
• Pickoff Responsibility
• Using Sun Glasses
• Picking Up Stationary Ball
• Throwing Behind Runner
• Getting Pitch Signals From Infielders

22. Pre-Game Preparation:

• Team Warm-Up Routine
• Pitcher’s Bull Pen Routine
• Pre-Game BP
• Per-Game Infield/Outfield

23. Coach’s Expectations:

• To Hustle To And From Positions.
• To not Argue With Officials.
• To Show Good Sportsmanship in Winning or Losing.
• To Play Your Hardest – To Give Your Best.
• No Profanity.
• To Not Throw Equipment.
• To Lift A Struggling Teammate.
• To Stay Mentally In The Game Between Innings – Always Be Aware Of the Current Game Situation.
• To Start Preparing For Your AB While Still In The Dugout.
• To Be Mentally & Physically Prepared While In The On-Deck Circle.
• To Know Your Responsibility For This AB Before Entering The Batter’s Box.
• To Execute To The Best Of Your Ability.
